Well, today got off to a weird start! As mentioned yesterday, we had five beds in our room, two bunks and one single. There was us in one bunk, a German and French guy, who seemed to know each other, in the other bunk, and a small, elderly, french lady in the remaining single bed. As soon as we'd all gone to bed, however, one of them began snoring like a bloody freight train. At one point I removed my ear plugs and listened, but I couldn't quite tell who it was. It got to its worst around 1:30am, and in frustration I shouted 'shut up!'. Magically, it was silent after that. Amazing, I thought.
Then, at around 6 to 6:30am, the french lady and the German guy began a duet of farting and I lay in the darkness wondering what World War 2 would have been like if they all did that instead of fighting!
Around half an hour later, when the three of them decided to put the lights on and get up at the same time, the German and French guys had a very angry go at me for apparently 'screaming all night', accusing me of waking up the entire hostel, and deeming MY behaviour as unacceptable! The German guy finished by telling ME to get private rooms in future! Haha.
Maybe they're angry at life, being in their twenties? perhaps they're being over-defensive because they know it was them that was snoring? Or maybe they're just a bit mental? Who knows?! They're gone now.
Our original plan was to walk the 27.5km to Logroño today (like virtually everyone else), but we're so tired this morning, and fed up with dorms in general, that we've made the snap decision to cut the walk short and stay in a nice hotel in the town of Viana. It's around 19 or 20km from Los Arcos so a really easy walk, then an even easier walk into Logroño tomorrow morning. Sleep and private comfort awaits!
Most walkers stop at the first cafe/bar they come to when entering any town/village. In this case it was Sansol, the first little town encountered after leaving Los Arcos. We therefore decided to continue the extra 800m or so to the neighbouring village of Torres del Rio and stopped at Bar Restaurante San Andres, which seemed to be a lot quieter!
Viana is a lovely, medieval town, on a hilltop, and well worth just a stop for lunch and a short look around, if heading straight to Logroño! We stayed for the night at the Palacio de Pujadas Hotel, for a little comfort, and watched the most incredible sunset from the ancient ruins of the Iglesia de San Pedro next door, as well as a pair of Peregrine Falcons circling around us!
