September and October are great times for visiting Angel Island. Overnight stays are allowed only with backpack camping reservations. To get a reservation on Fleet Week weekend, find out when the online reservations for those days start (like 6 or 7 months ahead of time) and expect them to sell out in seconds. At the Sunrise camp there was a single water spigot, a pit outhouse, and each site has a picnic table and wooden food locker to keep the racoons out of your stuff.

This was a fantastic family overnight backpack trip to Angel Island. Better yet, we were there on Saturday for the annual Fleet Week air show which we watched from the islands' high point, the peak of Mt. Livermore. We lucked out and had perfect weather - with rain just before and after the weekend! The track starts from the expensive parking near Pier 39 and we take the ferry to the cove, hike about 2.5 miles and 800' up to the top of Mt. Livermore. After watching the show we trek down to our overnight campsite at Sunrise #9 and settle in for dinner and the east bay lights. The next day we have a nice 1.7-mile hike back to the cove. We grab some coffee & a warm croissant from the cafe that had just opened for the day, then take the ferry to Tiburon, the Embarcadero Ferry Building and then finally to Pier 41.We capped it off with a great lunch and beer at 21A, but that's just driving so I edited it out of the track.
