Four volunteer trail maintainers worked on bridge 800.9588, the third structure in from TH15. Debris from flooding had lifted and relocated the center and downstation approach against downstream trees. It was classified as "hazardous to the public" and resulted in the closing of this section. Notes: - We removed the handrails and decoupled both decks from the post & beams. - Will need a block and tackle to complete removal of the old structure components. We were able to get two of the posts out (very heavy due to concrete on the end). The approach deck was levered over to the downstream side. - The center deck section was repositioned over the water channel and set on sills on each end. - Running planks were installed over the exposed roots on the upstation end. - Surplus materials were left stacked to the side of the trail on higher ground. The new structure is stable, though not well secured. during high water, it could float up and be pushed against two nearby downstream trees. Will return and install cables to keep in position. Also encountered three trees and around 8 small crowns/branches across the trail. Social trails have developed around them. Did not clear any of these. Mosquitoes were notably active. A volunteer attempted to conduct a survey to TH14, but stopped early due to large number of trail blocking trees and thick swarms of mosquitoes. No damage was noted to any structures, including the long walkway.
